Shape It A Perfect Gift for Budding Engineers to Become Industry Ready DR Subramani R Vaijayanthi S 9781946869166 Books

The author sets us thinking on some long lingering question that one faces in their working life, especially during what people call as the 'mid-life crisis'. How relevant am I today? How relevant will I be in near future? Will I be able to keep my job few months down the line, given that there are smarter folks coming out of colleges? Do I still have the urge to learn more, learn new?

The book starts of exploring the paradigm of half-life knowledge, and it is something that I see everyday at work. The domain that I work in - Data Science - is fast evolving. There are newer data sets, smarter ways to explore and newer fit for purpose tools emerging in the open source world. I see the data science world fast evolving, at a pace much faster than what it was even 5 years back. Half-life of an engineer is in months, and there are enough predictions that hints at AI replacing some of the current jobs quite quickly.

Elon Musk as recently as Nov 2016 has spoken about this. This also creates a huge opportunity for people to spend more time on learning and innovation, once their jobs are automated. For that to happen, the mindset of exploring newer things and not being afraid to embrace change is a must have quality that needs to be imbibed quite early in students today (as well as working professionals if it is not too late). The common adage that one keeps hearing in software industry, especially to the ones reluctant to changes in technology is to shape up or sit out.

There are numerous anecdotes and case studies from real life heroes who are quite inspiring in this space and has been dealt in this book. The authors have done due justice in covering the essence of these stories - clearly articulating the challenge, curiosity the drives the protagonist to explore a solution and how it was done. Every change or innovation is driven by some fear, fantasy or frustration.

Without being a spoiler for the book, some stand out examples that inspired me -
The story of Mohammad Anwar channelizing his energies from not getting into Aeronautics to making a name and space for himself and his journey from a small town in Kerala to designing and presenting his micro class aircraft design at an international Aerodesign competition in Texas
The curiosity of Aphurvikaa Mani that lead to research more on the crushed PET model and took her to Boston and get an audience with Nobel laureates
The frustration of waiting for a team mate to kick start the project work, which eventually became the problem statement and gave birth to WIKE - The Wash Bike

Excellent book for students and business persons alike.
This book is very well written and very timely, not only for young people focussed on getting a job in IT and Engineering fields. This book gives us real input into the future --- educators, employers, and everyone. The message of "learning", "staying involved", "staying current" comes through no matter your age and profession. I loved all of the quotations and the way the stories and experiences are presented throughout the book. Knowledge is power and acquiring knowledge for the sake of knowledge is awesome!!
An Excellent Book !

Though this book may be directed at the Indian audience, everyone across the globe can immensely benefit form the ideas and thoughts presented in the book.

Several examples are given to amplify the message and to reinforce the concepts.

Not only "Budding Engineers", but also "OlderEngineers", or for that matter, just about anyone can benefit by reading this book!

Well done!
